Aliso Dermatology
Blending wellness-inspired interiors with efficient healthcare planning
Located in Southern California, Aliso Dermatology was envisioned as a modern dermatology clinic that redefines the traditional healthcare experience. Designed with inspiration from boutique hospitality and wellness spaces, the clinic combines soft forms, warm natural materials, and carefully curated details to create an environment that feels both elevated and approachable. From the welcoming reception area to the thoughtfully planned treatment spaces, every element was designed to support patient comfort, operational efficiency, and a sense of calm. The result is a clinic that reflects Aliso Dermatology's commitment to exceptional care while providing patients with an experience that feels more like a luxury retreat than a medical office.

Redefining the Dermatology Experience
Aliso Dermatology set out to create a clinic that redefines the traditional healthcare experience, moving away from the sterile, institutional environments typically associated with medical spaces. The primary goal was to establish a setting that reflects the practice’s focus on skin health, beauty, and patient well-being, while delivering a calm, elevated experience from the moment patients arrive.
A key objective was to balance this hospitality-driven atmosphere with the functional demands of a high-performing dermatology clinic. The client wanted to maximize the number of treatment rooms to support future growth and increased patient capacity, without compromising comfort, spatial clarity, or the overall sense of openness within the clinic. This required careful planning to ensure efficiency in layout, circulation, and staff workflows while maintaining a welcoming patient experience.
Equally important was the desire to create a strong and memorable identity for the practice, one that would differentiate Aliso Dermatology from conventional medical clinics. The vision was to integrate warmth, softness, and natural influences into the design language, so that patients would immediately feel a sense of ease and reassurance upon entering the space.
Ultimately, the design objectives centered around three core principles: enhancing patient comfort, optimizing clinical functionality, and establishing a refined, wellness-oriented identity that positions the clinic as both a place of care and a place of experience.
Blending Wellness with Healthcare
After meeting with the client and learning more about their practice and vision for the space, we knew this project was a natural fit for Sansa Interiors. The goal was to bridge the gap between a traditional medical environment and a high-end wellness destination, aligning with our holistic approach to interior design.
Recognizing that healthcare environments can often feel cold or intimidating, the concept focused on creating an immediate sense of calm and comfort for patients. Inspired by biophilic design principles, natural materials, soft forms, and warm colours were incorporated throughout the clinic to foster a welcoming atmosphere. Repeating arches and curved architectural details create a rhythmic flow throughout the space, guiding movement intuitively while softening the overall experience.
The material palette draws inspiration from organic, skin-healthy tones. Terracotta, muted coral, and deep moss greens are layered against warm neutral backdrops to create depth, contrast, and a sense of warmth. Every finish was carefully selected to feel elevated while remaining durable and appropriate for a healthcare setting.
Rather than relying on standard institutional fixtures, many functional elements were thoughtfully integrated into the architecture itself. Custom backlit signage provides subtle wayfinding while contributing to the overall aesthetic, and high-performance materials such as porcelain surfaces and flat-slab cabinetry ensure the clinic meets the demanding operational and hygiene requirements of a medical practice. The result is a space that proves functionality and beautiful design can coexist seamlessly.
Understanding the Existing Space
Before Aliso Dermatology took ownership, the unit operated as a traditional dental clinic. While functionally a medical space, the existing environment was dated, overly sterile, and burdened by a fragmented layout that starkly contrasted with our client’s vision for a holistic patient experience. To achieve the high-end, welcoming atmosphere they desired, we initiated a complete interior gut to provide a true blank canvas.
Situated within a larger mixed-use medical building, patients naturally transition through generic common areas before arriving at the clinic. Recognizing this journey, we strategically designed the entry and reception to serve as a high-impact focal point—an immediate visual cue that patients have stepped into a distinct, elevated sanctuary.
Furthermore, the space presented a massive architectural advantage: as a corner unit, it featured expansive windows along two external walls. Capitalizing on this abundant natural daylight became an immediate priority in our spatial planning. By leveraging these existing structural strengths, we knew the raw unit held the exact potential needed to fully realize our client's vision.
Flow & Function
The spatial layout of Aliso Dermatology was carefully designed as a guided patient journey, ensuring every transition through the clinic feels intuitive, calm, and clearly defined. Rather than a purely clinical circulation model, the experience is structured to support comfort and ease from the moment patients arrive to the moment they leave.
Upon entry, patients are welcomed into a dedicated reception and waiting area that establishes the first impression of the clinic. Positioned away from the clinical core, this space is intentionally designed to feel open, warm, and calming—setting the tone for a more hospitality-driven healthcare experience. Administrative functions are kept discreetly contained within this zone, allowing the patient-facing environment to remain visually clean and focused.
Once checked in, patients are naturally guided toward the heart of the clinic: the centrally located nurses’ station. Acting as both an operational hub and a transitional waypoint, this space helps orient patients within the clinic while maintaining clear visibility and support from staff. Its central placement ensures patients always feel connected to care, without feeling exposed or overwhelmed by the clinical activity surrounding them.
From this point, patients are directed into their treatment rooms through a clear and legible circulation path. The progression from public to private space is carefully controlled, reducing confusion and creating a sense of ease as patients move deeper into the clinic. Along this journey, natural light from the clerestory windows filters into the central core, softening the clinical environment and reinforcing a sense of calm continuity between spaces.
The experience concludes with a straightforward and intuitive return path back to reception, ensuring patients exit the clinic with the same sense of clarity and comfort with which they arrived. This deliberate sequencing transforms what is typically a functional clinical layout into a cohesive and reassuring patient experience, where navigation feels effortless and every transition is thoughtfully considered.
Overcoming Project Constraints
Adapting to a New Regulatory and Permit Environment
A second, closely related challenge was navigating the permit submission process in California. As Sansa Interiors primarily works within the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and Greater Toronto Area (GTA) jurisdiction, the regulatory framework in California introduced a new set of requirements that required careful review and adaptation.
Beyond differences in code standards relevant to the project, the permit submission process itself varied significantly in terms of required drawing sets, documentation, and coordination protocols. This meant we had to quickly familiarize ourselves with unfamiliar municipal expectations and adjust our typical submission workflow accordingly.
To address this, we leaned on critical thinking, thorough research, and support from local consultants familiar with California permitting practices. Through this collaborative and solution-driven approach, we were able to successfully meet all submission requirements while maintaining the design intent and ensuring a smooth approval process.
Navigating an International Design Collaboration
One of the primary challenges of this project was its international scope. Sansa Interiors is based in Toronto, Canada, while the clinic is located in California, USA. Despite the distance, both the client and our team recognized a strong alignment in vision and expertise, and were committed to making the collaboration work seamlessly.
To bridge the geographic gap, we adapted our process to rely heavily on digital communication and coordinated closely with local consultants for site visits, measurements, and inspections. This allowed us to maintain design integrity while ensuring on-the-ground requirements were accurately addressed.
The distance also required a more strategic approach to material selection. We prioritized specifying finishes, fixtures, and products that were readily available within the local market to avoid procurement delays and ensure smooth construction sequencing. This added layer of consideration helped maintain both design intent and project feasibility, despite the cross-border nature of the collaboration.
Coordinating Construction Within an Active Multi-Use Building
A third challenge emerged during the construction phase, driven by the constraints of working within a multi-use building. With other active tenants in the building—including a surgical unit directly below the project space—construction activities were subject to strict scheduling limitations to minimize noise, disruption, and general site impact.
This required careful coordination of working hours, sequencing of construction activities, and ongoing communication to ensure compliance with building management requirements and consideration for adjacent users. These constraints added complexity to the construction timeline and demanded a highly organized and responsive approach on-site.
Fortunately, we partnered with a highly flexible and solutions-oriented construction team who were able to adapt to these limitations without compromising progress. Through strong coordination and efficient scheduling, the project remained on track and all deadlines were successfully met.
The End Result
Aliso Dermatology represents a thoughtful reimagining of what a modern dermatology clinic can be—where clinical precision and operational efficiency are seamlessly paired with warmth, comfort, and a refined sense of hospitality. From the earliest stages of concept development through to construction completion, every decision was guided by the goal of creating a space that elevates the patient experience while supporting the evolving needs of a growing practice.
The result is a clinic that moves beyond the traditional expectations of healthcare environments, offering patients a setting that feels calm, intentional, and welcoming from the moment they arrive. Through careful planning, collaborative problem-solving, and a shared vision with the client, the project successfully balances aesthetics, function, and regulatory complexity.
Aliso Dermatology now stands as a space that not only reflects the identity and values of the practice, but also demonstrates how thoughtful interior design can meaningfully shape the way healthcare is experienced.
