Chachee’s Chai Cafe

A Story of Culture, Comfort, and Connection

Designed by Sansa Interiors Inc. and located in Mississauga, Ontario, Chachee’s Chai Cafe brings together the rich traditions of Indian chai culture with the familiarity and comfort of a modern neighbourhood cafe. Rooted in authentic Eastern flavours, the menu ranges from slow-simmered masala chai to savory paninis, offering guests a unique experience that blends heritage with contemporary tastes.

The vision for the space was to create more than just a place to grab a drink. Chachee’s was designed to feel warm, welcoming, and inspiring. A destination where guests can slow down, connect, and enjoy a moment of comfort in their day. Whether meeting old friends or making new connections, the cafe encourages community through the simple ritual of sharing a cup of chai.

Sansa Interiors carefully crafted the environment to reflect Chachee’s vibrant brand identity while supporting the operational needs of the business. From the functional layout to the thoughtfully selected finishes and materials, every design decision was made with intention, creating a space that celebrates tradition while embracing a fresh, contemporary cafe experience.

Bringing the Chachee's Brand to Life

We designed this café to create a memorable atmosphere centered around human connection. In a busy urban environment, the goal was to provide a welcoming destination where guests can work, socialize, or simply pause and enjoy a thoughtfully crafted cup of chai. Rather than relying on a traditional minimalist approach, the design embraces warmth and character through a rich palette of terracotta tones, layered greens, varied textures, and carefully curated patterns. The result is a space that feels vibrant yet comfortable, energizing yet inviting. A mix of seating options encourages different styles of use, while the immersive environment draws guests in, encouraging them to linger, connect with others, and fully experience the ritual and culture behind every cup.

Our client envisioned a space that would feel connected to their existing locations while introducing elevated design elements that would give this café its own distinctive identity. Striking the right balance between brand consistency and design innovation became a guiding principle throughout the project. It was important that guests would instantly recognize the Chachee's brand, while experiencing a space with a unique character tailored to this location.

In response, our team translated the client's vision into a cohesive and highly intentional environment defined by layered lighting, integrated branding, and a carefully curated material palette. Every finish, fixture, and colour selection was considered for the role it would play in shaping the guest experience. The result is a space that builds upon the brand's established identity while introducing rich, thoughtful details that create a memorable destination for the community to gather, connect, and enjoy their daily chai ritual.

Rich Layers of Texture and Storytelling

Chachee’s Chai Cafe truly offers “more than chai.” Founded in honour of their father’s long-held dream of opening his own chai café, the space is deeply rooted in family, culture, and connection. From the very beginning, our team recognized that a story this meaningful deserved an equally thoughtful design experience. At the heart of this project’s design philosophy is a commitment to passion and hospitality, translating a deeply personal narrative into an inviting space where every guest feels welcome.

To bring this vision to life, we curated a material and color palette that strikes a perfect balance between creative inspiration and grounding relaxation. A dynamic mix of soft and deep greens paired with warm terracotta oranges and reds establishes a rich, organic foundation. Overhead, wood-grained architectural profiles wrap the ceiling to instill an immediate layer of coziness, while beautifully patterned ceiling drapery introduces an element of unique, tactile character. Chachee’s brand identity is seamlessly woven into the design through custom wallpaper and soft arch niches that speak of the brand in a way that flows organically with the rest of the environment.

We focused heavily on sightlines and structural vignettes to tell a story through the architecture. Positioned directly behind the front counter, arched back-bar niches create an inviting focal point, displaying the café’s items and ingredients with intentionality so that every single piece of the design works together. Built-in display niches showcase antique ceramics, anchoring the contemporary space with a sense of history, heritage, and character. For guests seeking quiet comfort, an intimate, recessed seating nook paired with a soft sconce light acts as a quiet sanctuary, intentionally designed to prompt guests to take a step back, slow down, and unwind.

Intentional Spatial Flow

Designing the layout for Chachee’s Chai Cafe required a careful balance between operational efficiency and an elevated guest experience, with the customer journey ultimately driving our spatial decisions. The goal was to create a floor plan that felt intuitive and welcoming from the moment guests entered, while still supporting a highly functional and efficient back-of-house operation.

To achieve this, Sansa Interiors analyzed circulation patterns and natural movement within the existing space to shape a layout that prioritizes ease of flow for guests. Upon entry, the POS system is positioned to feel immediately accessible and intuitive, guiding customers naturally toward the ordering point without creating congestion or bottlenecks. Subtle retail moments are integrated beneath the counter through curated display niches, encouraging passive engagement with the brand as guests move through the space.

While the guest experience remained central, equal attention was given to the efficiency of the service zone. The counter layout was carefully planned to support staff workflow, with optimized clearances and strategically placed equipment that allows for smooth, uninterrupted service. Importantly, this operational efficiency was achieved without compromising the footprint of the dining area, preserving as much space as possible for guest seating and circulation.

From the counter onward, the space opens into a variety of intentionally zoned seating areas that support different modes of use. High-energy communal seating encourages social interaction during peak hours, while more intimate and secluded areas offer quieter moments of retreat. This layered approach allows the café to shift naturally throughout the day, evolving from a lively morning destination into a calm, relaxed afternoon environment.

Overcoming Challenges

Retrofitting Existing Infrastructure

One of the key challenges on this project was balancing sustainability goals and budget constraints with the need to transform an existing interior. A significant portion of the original space, including the main banquette seating, had to be retained rather than fully replaced. While structurally sound and practical to reuse, its original aesthetic did not align with the new design direction for the café.

Rather than removing it, we took a considered approach by fully recladding and refining the existing unit to integrate it seamlessly into the updated interior. Through new materials, detailing, and proportions, the banquette was transformed into a cohesive, custom-feeling feature that anchors the dining space. This solution allowed us to reduce waste and manage costs effectively while still achieving a refined, unified design outcome.

Precision Tile Inlays

Our team proposed introducing a new decorative tile inlay at the front counter to elevate the overall impact of the space. This approach allowed us to enhance a key focal point within the café while preserving the majority of the existing floor tile, aligning with both budget and sustainability considerations.

Because no extra pieces of the original tile were available, the execution required an extremely precise level of coordination and craftsmanship. Every cut had to be carefully planned, with no margin for error during installation. Despite the technical complexity, the result is a seamless integration between old and new, with the inlay creating a strong visual anchor at the counter while the surrounding flooring remains intact and uninterrupted..

Maximizing Seating

While upcycling the existing banquette anchored one side of the room, optimizing the remaining square footage to capture the highest possible guest capacity without making the café feel cramped proved to be a delicate balancing act. Our team played around with numerous seating layouts to find the perfect configuration. By introducing a deliberate "lounge effect," we were able to bring a comfortable, highly social layer to the environment that encourages guests to linger, while successfully working within the existing footprint to accommodate as many seats as possible.

The End Result

The final result is a warm, narrative-driven environment that gracefully balances the modern demands of a bustling urban café with subtle nods to the family’s heritage. Rather than making a loud statement, the space weaves storytelling into quiet architectural details, ensuring the memory of their father’s dream is felt in the warmth of the lighting, the depth of the textures, and the genuine hospitality embedded in the layout.

By honoring the past while designing for the future, the café now stands as a welcoming sanctuary for community, conversation, and connection. The subtle architectural nods (from the historic resonance of the ceramic niches to the communal layout of the seating arrangements) ensure that every patron who sits down to enjoy a cup of chai feels an immediate sense of belonging within a warm, welcoming community. It is a space designed not just to serve a neighborhood, but to gather it.

Sansa Interiors is incredibly proud to have collaborated with Chachee’s Chai Cafe on this deeply meaningful journey. By weaving their intimate family history into a sophisticated, highly functional cafe environment, we have helped create a signature location that honors their roots, celebrates their unique story, and provides a powerful, scalable foundation to support their continued growth and future locations.
